Recall records the agencies write are public domain. Recall Canary's own text is offered under CC-BY-4.0.
Agency recall records: public domain
Recall records the agencies write are U.S. government works, so they are in the public domain in the United States (17 U.S.C. § 105). Recall Canary imposes no additional claim on the agency text it republishes.
Some notices the FDA posts are announcements written by the recalling company. Those words are the company's, and we quote them as published.

Recall Canary's own text is offered under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license (CC-BY-4.0). Our own text includes:
- Uniform presentation of each agency's own class or warning; Recall Canary assigns none.
- Display titles, display summaries, and consumer-action text (AI-derived display text).
- Curation and clustering decisions.
- Editorial tooltips, provenance attributes, and page structure.
AI-generated content attribution
Our titles, summaries and "What to do" text are written with the help of AI (large language models). That text is marked in these places:
- Recall pages (HTML) that carry a summary: the line at the bottom of the page says "Summary by Recall Canary, written with AI". HTML pages carry no
data-aiattribute. - Markdown versions of
/and/recalls(sent forAccept: text/markdown): each entry with AI-written fields carries adata-ai:line naming them. - JSON (
/data/*and the MCP endpoint): each record carries anai_generatedobject naming that record's AI-written fields. A compact MCP search row carries a true or false flag for each display field it holds, and noai_generatedwhen it holds none.
Listing cards, the RSS feed and the email digest carry no per-item marker.
The model used changes over time as the pipeline is tuned for cost and quality, so these markers record that text is AI-derived, not a pinned model revision. Downstream consumers should assume our own text is a moving target and record their own snapshot timestamps.
Redistribution
Redistribution of our own text is permitted under CC-BY-4.0 with:
- Attribution to "Recall Canary" with a link back to the source page.
- A snapshot timestamp recording when the text was captured, so your readers can tell how current it is.
- Preservation of the
data-aiprovenance marker where AI-generated text is redistributed, or an equivalent in-band attribution.
Redistribution of agency recall records requires no attribution under U.S. copyright law, but attributing the originating agency is strongly encouraged.
Source-agency data terms
Recall Canary acknowledges each source agency's data terms and usage guidelines:
- FDA: U.S. Food and Drug Administration enforcement reports and RSS feeds.
- FSIS: U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service recall API.
- CPSC: U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall API and RSS feeds.
- NHTSA: National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall API.
For authoritative and unmodified agency text, consult the originating agency directly.
