What happened
Buy-Herbal, of Flushing, New York, is voluntarily recalling all lots of Kian Pee Wan Capsules, 30-count bottles, because FDA analysis found the product contains undeclared drug ingredients dexamethasone and cyproheptadine. The capsules are marketed as a dietary supplement for weight gain and stimulating appetite, but products containing these ingredients cannot be marketed as dietary supplements.
The product is an unapproved drug for which safety and efficacy have not been established, and therefore subject to recall. The company began the recall on March 21, 2026, and announced it on March 30, 2026.
Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid commonly used to treat inflammatory conditions. Corticosteroid use can impair a person's ability to fight infections and can cause high blood sugar levels, muscle injuries, psychiatric problems, and lead to cardiovascular events.
When taken for a prolonged period or at high doses, they can suppress the adrenal gland, with adverse consequences ranging from limited to death, and abrupt discontinuation can cause withdrawal symptoms.
Cyproheptadine is a prescription antihistamine used for seasonal allergy treatment, and consumption may cause sedation, dizziness, fatigue, restlessness, dry mouth, nausea, diarrhea/constipation, urinary retention, and blurred vision.
The product was sold to individual consumers via an ebay third party seller, and the seller is notifying customers by press announcement and email and arranging returns. The capsules are packaged in a white bottle with beige label containing 30 pills.
