Gardeners Basics Waltham 29 Broccoli Sprouting Seeds

Broccoli sprouting seeds may be contaminated with Salmonella, which can cause serious infections.

What to do

What happened

Gardeners Basics of Spanish Fork, Utah, recalled one-pound bags of Waltham 29 Broccoli Sprouting Seeds on October 8, 2026, because they may be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection can result in more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.

The product was distributed nationwide through online sales on Amazon, gardenersbasics.com TikTok Shop, Walmart, eBay and Etsy. The recalled seeds are packaged in a white and green resealable pouch, net weight 1 pound, marked 'Packed for 2027.'

On September 26, 2026, the seed supplier notified Gardeners Basics that bulk broccoli seed was recalled because Salmonella was detected in a sample collected by the FDA, and the seeds were identified as being used by a sprout grower whose finished product was part of an FDA investigation involving a multistate foodborne illness outbreak.

No illnesses related to this product had been reported as of October 6, 2026. Sales have stopped, and consumers should stop using the seeds and not eat them or any sprouts grown from them.
