What happened
Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc. of Brooklyn, New York, is voluntarily recalling STARFISH SEAFOOD PREMIUM COLD SMOKED NORWEGIAN SALMON SLICED (227g/8oz) packages because the product has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.
Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this product.
The potential contamination was identified by sampling of the product conducted by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets. The recalled product is identified as STARFISH SEAFOOD PREMIUM COLD SMOKED NORWEGIAN SALMON SLICED, brand STARFISH SEAFOOD, net weight 227g/8oz, storage method frozen, packaging vacuum-sealed plastic package, country of origin Latvia. Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc. is a wholesale distributor and did not manufacture the recalled product.
