The week in recalls
A pump that can quietly stop delivering insulin, eye drops that may not be clean, and a bulk food missing a major allergen. The devices and medicines took up much of the room.
Recall CanaryUpdated
Let's look at what got recalled this week. There were 67 recalls in all, and they were mostly medicines and medical devices. The ones that matter most involve an insulin pump, some eye drops, and a bulk food sold without a proper label, so let's start there.
Tandem Diabetes Care recalled its Tandem Mobi insulin pump because it can set off a false occlusion alarm. Occlusion means a blockage, but here there is no blockage at all. Extra friction inside the pump makes the motor slow down, and the pump mistakes that for a blocked tube and stops delivering insulin. If you wear one of these pumps, your blood sugar can climb without warning. This is a high risk recall, so check whether your pump is affected and talk to your diabetes team about what to do while you wait for a fix.
Preferred Pharmaceuticals pulled Artificial Tears Lubricant Eye Drops because the company cannot show they were made cleanly. Eye drops go straight onto your eye, so if germs get in, an infection can follow. If you have a bottle at home, stop using it. House Foods America also recalled Seitan Cubes sold in bulk without a proper label. The label never mentions wheat, which is a serious problem for anyone with a wheat allergy. This one is rated high risk.
There is more in the full list below, including a blood pressure medicine that may carry extra impurities and a heart pump controller with a software problem. Take a minute to check your own shelves and your medicine cabinet. If something you own is on the list, follow the instructions from the company or the agency, and pass the word to anyone you know who uses the same product.
